Planning Task 5 : Mock Up Of Covers 1 and 2.

This is the very first, small drawing of how I want the two magazines to look and seen by Magazine 1 and 2 below, clearly do keep quite close to the original concepts.

Magazine 1:

Magazine 2:

These are two mock-up drawings of how I would like to lay out the two issues of Cadence. As though it were the real two first issues of a new music magazine.
Alongside the layout, these are some examples of the coverlines which may end up as the real coverlines for each magazine. To be authentic have included details like: a barcode, price tag and puff. Items which will be required on the final product.
There may be areas I later wish to change for instance why the coverlines are not definitively going to be in the final product as they are. But this will be in someway how I envision currently the final product coming out looking.
Even from the very first concept to the individual ones - there is changes, so more are most likely to take place.
And also, as set out in Task 3 - I plan on using a different font for the masthead and strapline. Watermelon font & Retro Cool font. Which will make these covers look even different to their final form. But these mock ups are important as it will give some structure and be able to look to them for a consistent vision. And I already made clear, I plan on having the title at the top of the cover in large and then just beneath far smaller, the strapline as an accompaniment.

Planning Task 4 : Front Cover Design.

There are four main components of all magazines:
1. Main coverline.
2. Other coverlines.
3. Main images.
4. Page furniture.

Of course, not all magazines will stick to all of these components but they will be the main components magazines choose to include.
But these will be components used in this music magazines front cover design.
The fonts for the coverlines will be with the use of the same font as the strapline rather than the font used for the masthead.
The main image will need to connect to Cadence being a music magazine and also be associated with the pop genre, which Cadence is aimed to focus on.

Magazine 1.

Masthead: Cadence.
Strapline: Delve into the best of music.

Main coverline: What the future of music looks like.
Coverline 1: 'A one-hit wonder' proving us all wrong.
Coverline 2: Results of our audiences favourite artists.
Coverline 3: Two exclusive posters inside.

Magazine 2.

Masthead: Cadence.
Strapline: Delve into the best of music.

Main coverline: For the love the art.
Coverline 1: Poll: Our audiences favourite genres?
Coverline 2: The stunning story of success.
Coverline 3: Claim a Free CD.

Planning Task Three: Masthead Design.

Fonts used:
* Rockwell Extra Bold.
* Blue Ocean.
* Retro Cool.
* Watermelon.

The fonts for both the masthead and strapline are crucial as they will be what peoples eyes will first go to and so needs to pop in order to be eye-catching, as people will not want to buy a magazine if it looks dull or boring.
The Rockwell Extra Bold, is an example of a more traditional kind of font and so could be classed as basic. Whereas, the other three are irregular and do give off a different energy to most fonts for magazine mastheads or straplines.
But rather than just choosing one of these fonts, I would be more inclined to go with the Watermelon font for the masthead whilst using Retro Cool for the strapline.
I have chosen to have the masthead in capitals, to grab attention. Whilst for the strapline to remain in lower case lettering.
Some magazines do not keep a particular colour for each issue of their magazine, and Cadence will be one of those magazines which will not stick to that convention. And so in every monthly release will be a different colour on the masthead/strapline. That is why I have left them in black instead of a certain colour, since it wont be stuck to.
The size is also important to pick up on, as the layout above will be similar to when it appears on the cover with the watermelon font title in large at the top of the print and sat underneath in much smaller type, with the retro cool font, the strapline.

Planning Task One : Magazine Title and Strapline.

To decide what the strapline and title should be, the first objective will be to produce a title and strapline that need to relate to the music magazine which will center mainly on the pop genre. Or if including the genre is too specific to work, it is vital that it at least links in the audiences mind the idea of this magazine and music.
The title needs to be simple which makes it more memorable and harder to forget, but also for the strapline too, there needs to be something in it which can tell a reader right away it is a music magazine and more specifically a pop music magazine.

For the strapline there are a few requirements:
1. Efficiently in only a few words describes the music magazine, its values and explains enough about it for someone who has just come across the magazine before.
2. An obvious second requirement which goes as much for the title as it does for the strapline - do not copy or be similar to any already existing brand, first due to it being plagiarism and second the desire to avoid confusion.
3. Stick in the brain, meaning it wont be quickly forgotten about.

The music magazine title option I chose to go with was Cadence, as it has several meanings, meanings which could be seen as correlating with the music magazine:
1. A modulation or inflection of the voice.
2. A rhythmical effect in written text.
3. A fall in pitch of the voice at the end of a phrase or sentence.
4. A sequence of notes or chords comprising the close of a musical phrase.

The benefits of having the title being one word is that the simpler, the better and easier to remember. But not just that, being a less common word it is unlikely competitors would use the title for their own music magazine. Being not so commonly used as a word, when the word gets used it will be easy to conjure images of the magazine when the word is brought up. Especially when this word is easy to pronounce yet distinctly unique to be able to make the word prominently connected to the music magazine.

Strapline:

One theme I want to get across within the strapline, is an invitation for an adventure; taking the reader on an adventure.
Include emotional language; and be attention grabbing.
Personality, also should be a key in crafting the strapline.

After coming up with several options the strapline I have ended up believing to have the most effect and will be used on the music magazines is 'Delve into the best of music.' Though simple will be an easy way to establish to people who might come across the music magazine, who is being marketed at for this magazine.
Using imperative language to give off a sense of necessity to people as to why it is so important they read this music magazine, by literally having the cover tell people to do so. I also stated my previous intention to create a strapline with the idea of going through an adventure or quest by purchasing and digesting the media within Cadence. This is the rationale behind using the adjective 'delve' it gives off the idea of going deep into discovery.
The only problem I see with this strapline is that it is not very catchy as other alternatives, yet this will incentives doubly the look of the music magazine covers in making them eye-catchy.

Research Task Nine : Target Audience Research And Analysis.

The best way to understand an audience is to question them, so in order to understand how best to market to an audience who want to buy music magazines, and what would appeal to them. This will all be done in service of understanding how best to start a new independent music magazine, which can attract the broadest possible range of readers.
To complete this I will ask questions to ten people, each in an interview-style situation. These will be the same set of questions for each person as to see where similarities lie or differences instead. The ten interviewees will be people aging from 16-25 to get the widest set of results. Since if we wish to set up a new music magazine for ages between 16 to 25 it would be a grave mistake to only ask 25 year-olds questions as otherwise it will essentially just be a music magazine for 25 year-olds. The same for gender, the interviewees will need to be both male and female. Since only targeting one gender significantly cuts off a wide part of a potential market. So, for both age and gender, the skill will be, being able to find a middle ground which can bring in both genders and a large percentage of each of the age brackets we will want to bring in.

The Questions:

These are the questions I intent to ask to the ten people involved in the interviews.

1) Age: What is your age?
2) Gender: What is your gender?

The reasons why an interviewees age and gender will be important, have already been explained so I do not see the need to repeat that explanation.

3) How many genres of music can you name?
4) What is your favourite genre of music?

Based off if there are a repetition of answers, will be clearer to see which genre to focus in on as the goal will be to get the largest number of readers. Or if the same genre is not answered then will know it will have to be a variety of genres put into one.

5) Favourite artist? Do you have one, if so who are they?

Help to indicate whether people are that interest in music and if they are interested in a genre but did not know what it was called.

6) Do they buy music magazines? If so, which and why? If not, why not?

Gives a context to whether people have a strong enjoyment in music or not. And may explain why other methods of digesting the same content has taken over.

7) Do they visit music websites? If so, which and why? If not. why not?

Will help to explain why people feel the need to use music websites. And for both the music website and magazine I want to set up, will help explain what has to be different to encourage those who would not normally use either to actually buy a music magazine or visit a music website.

8) If a new music magazine was being published, what would make them want to buy it, or go to its website?
9) How much would you be willing to pay for a music magazine?
10) Is there anything which would encourage them to buy the first edition of a new magazine?

These three questions in particular will be necessary for the understanding of our target audience. For instance with the range a person would be willing to pay, help in telling what the target audiences thinking is. Helpful in determining what has to be done in order to stand out from the already existing music websites and magazines.

This has been both useful and important, collecting information from questioning people who would fit into the 16 to 24 year old target audience. From the answers given to the repeated questions, it demonstrates far ranging differences in peoples interests and habits. And the problem comes in that the mission will be to produce a product which appeals to widest number of people within the target we want to reach, in spite of the fact the range of these people varies so substantially. For example, the data demonstrates the mixture of genres of music people consume, as well as, gives us an indicator for the average price that realistically people would accept paying for a music magazine.
From the data collected given that the most commonly answered genre was pop, and if that is what the largest amount of the target audience favour, then that should be the genre focused on based off questioning the customers, importantly remembering to have a relatively low price range otherwise lose a large amount of the target audience. Another way the survey has been useful is that it shows that many people do not see music magazines as a necessary method to get information, so will need to justify this new music magazine existing for it to be successful.
Particularly when in modern times, people digest what only a matter of decades ago what they got from the magazines by the means of other avenues. E.g., social media.

Reflection Point : What Have I Learned About Independent Music Magazine Websites?

What I have learned from looking at three different independent magazines websites is that the level of quality can vary, this is due in part to the need to have a great amount of resources in order to have a top tier website. And to be a successful website needs to reinforce the brand identity, such as having the same masthead they use for their magazine as well as prominently displaying the most recent issue they have published; want you to buy it. The goal is for the website to feel like the person visiting the website is reading the magazine, by using the same colour scheme or speaking about similar subjects. The reason for this is that they wish long time readers to recognise the website as the magazine as it will make them more likely if a fan of the magazine to navigate the site for longer.

Two features of all three independent magazines that I looked at were the promotion of social media platforms that the magazines have a presents on, a second way of boosting engagement as it will incentives further digestion of more of the brands content. A second, somewhat more important feature is the inclusion of advertisements. As these are what keep focusing on the site profitable, along with extra funds which can help go to the independent magazines other ventures, necessary as almost all independent magazines will not have piles and piles of cash to play with so need to use every avenue to be able to keep the business going. The use of advertisements on the website one such way.
